Muscle Motor Point Atlas and Needling Pitfalls
    (2022) SILVA, B. N. da; CHUNG, T. M.
In this chapter, we will discuss the methodology of intraoperative recording of motor potentials, whose elementary electrical generator lies in the motor units. Understanding the theory of muscle electrical generators and their measurement methods is fundamental to optimize the positioning of the recording electrodes, obtaining more robust initial potentials, which will be used as reference during the monitoring of an entire surgical procedure. For a more comprehensive understanding of motor units and muscle generators, please refer to Dumitru et al. (2002). © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

    Thermography in musculoskeletal diseases
    (2023) OLIVEIRA, N. C. de; ALFIERI, F. M.; BATTISTELLA, L. R.
The progression of the studies in the field of thermography has been contributing to the employment of this technique for the investigation of clinical conditions where pain is present. Examples include chronic musculoskeletal disorders, and the most prevalent ones are osteoarthritis and low back pain. Osteoarthritis is an important cause of pain and disability among patients. Chronic low back pain, in turn, affects 80% of the population at least in some period of life. As the prevalence of these diseases tends to grow, they constitute a public health issue worldwide. In this scenario, thermography arises as a method that can provide a better understanding of these diseases. Hence, this chapter discusses the distribution of body temperature in these diseases, as well as the pathophysiology regarding body temperature and its relationship with pain. © 2023 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. Thermography in strokes
    (2023) ALFIERI, F. M.; SANTOS, A. C. A. dos; BATTISTELLA, L. R.
Among the consequences of stroke, sensory disorders can affect more than half of patients. One of the consequences is the change in body temperature between the hemibodies that the patients can perceive or neglect. Although this temperature difference has been reported as unpleasant, little is understood or studied. As autonomic disorders are present in patients with stroke, and as thermography can assess body temperature distribution, using this assessment in these patients is feasible. This chapter will address body temperature distribution in patients with and without stroke and the associations between sensorimotor recovery, sensitivity, perception, and body temperature in individuals with stroke sequelae. © 2023 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. Body temperature and thermography
    (2023) ALFIERI, F. M.; OLIVEIRA, N. C. de; BATTISTELLA, L. R.
The interest in body temperature comes from the most remote times. It is known that the regulation of body temperature is important for the maintenance of homeostasis, which in turn is vital for the proper functioning of body fluids and tissues. Hypothalamus, located in the central region of the brain, is responsible for maintaining body temperature regulation between 35.5°C to 37.7°. Thermography is a method designed to assess skin surface temperature, able to provide data on the symmetry (or asymmetry) of body hemispheres. This chapter will discuss studies related to the physiology of body temperature, the importance of similar temperature distribution between body hemispheres, and normality patterns of this distribution evaluated by thermography. © 2023 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. Postural control and thermography
    (2023) BRONSTEIN, P. N.; ALFIERI, F. M.; BATTISTELLA, L. R.
Effective postural control requires proper functioning and interaction among the sensorimotor and nervous systems. Maintaining an orthostatic posture in tasks that require the body to be erect involves information processing from the visual, vestibular, and somatosensory systems, as well as proprioceptive and cutaneous inputs regarding the contact between the plantar region and the surface. These inputs are integrated and processed by the nervous system, which coordinates neuromuscular responses to stabilize the center of mass within the base of support to maintain postural orientation and balance. Sensory information from the environment and within the body is critical to detect and correct postural instabilities. The autonomic nervous system regulates body temperature, and thermography provides extremely accurate information about body temperature distribution. Temperature changes captured by thermography may suggest possible regional modifications of muscles blood perfusion, which are mainly responsible for maintaining postural control. Therefore, combining postural assessment with thermography can provide a more comprehensive view of the patient's condition. This chapter aims to review studies that have conducted postural assessment in combination with thermography to verify the correlation between these two assessments. By analyzing these studies, we aim to understand the potential benefits of using thermography as an additional tool for evaluating postural control. © 2023 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
